TikTok ban update (and the rise of short videos on LinkedIn)

On Friday, Dec. 6, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied TikTok’s petition to overturn the law requiring TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January. TikTok and ByteDance are expected to appeal to the Supreme Court.

If the ban proceeds, it does not mean TikTok goes poof! on Jan. 19. Rather, the app can still be used by those who have downloaded it to their devices. However, because Apple and Google app stores will no longer be able to carry or support TikTok, users will no longer have access to software updates, making their downloaded app not usable at some point in the future.

What this means for AOE and our clients

With the case likely headed for the Supreme Court, it is business as usual as we take a wait-and-see approach. For those using or considering TikTok for social media marketing, AOE suggests continuing with the creation of short-form videos—they are perfect for cross-posting to YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. The recommended video format dimensions for all three platforms are the same. Depending on the topic and target audience, LinkedIn may also be a good channel for sharing short-form videos. Reach out to us today if you want to explore these options.

According to a recent Hootsuite webinar in 2025 social media trends, LinkedIn is an ideal platform for experimenting with posting different types of content, including long and short videos. In 2024, the platform introduced a short video feature that allows users to create vertical videos, which are typically 30 seconds to 1 minute long. To watch videos, mobile app users can either scroll until they find the “videos for you” feed or tap on a video and swipe up to cycle through video content.

A recent Forbes article explains the TikTok scenario in detail (fun fact: the U.S. is not the only country banning or partially banning TikTok) and also speculates on what could happen with a new presidential administration entering the picture Jan. 20. NBC News also reports the court’s opinion stated a 90-day extension can be granted "based upon progress" toward the divestiture order.
