In the construction industry, "mental toughness" has long been synonymous with enduring stress and suppressing emotions. But this traditional mindset is being redefined. True toughness lies in acknowledging challenges and seeking support—a shift that fosters resilience and well-being. The Construction Mental Health Alliance (CMHA) is leading this charge, breaking down the harmful "tough guy" culture and promoting psychological safety as a cornerstone of workplace health.

There is likely nothing tougher than football, but mental health awareness is growing. The Buffalo Bills stadium project exemplifies this transformation. By integrating on-site mental health resources, including a dedicated counselor, the project prioritizes workers' emotional well-being alongside physical safety. This proactive approach addresses the unique stressors of construction, from job instability to work-life imbalance, proving that mental health is as critical as any safety protocol.

Ready to take action? Explore CMHA's "Mental Health Toughness Action Plan" for practical steps to redefine toughness, spot warning signs, and create a culture of support. Visit the CMHA website today to access these resources and more.

The Construction Mental Health Alliance is a new 501(c)(3) organization that is working to address the challenges of mental health support in the construction industry head-on. Their mission is to drive systemic change in the construction industry by embedding mental health, emotional well-being and psychological safety into every level of the workforce—from company leadership to the jobsite. AOE is a proud sponsor and volunteer with CMHA.
