Why anniversaries matter, lessons in legacy from the AEC industry

In an industry that caters to building structures and infrastructure designed to last for decades, marking time carries real weight. A major anniversary proves an organization has weathered economic cycles, technical shifts and changing leadership, while continuing to serve its audience. For the AEC industry, longevity signals the trust and reliability that engineers, architects and contractors look for in a partner.

This year, AOE has the pleasure of helping two clients showcase special anniversaries: the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) and the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program.

Founded in 1976, PTI is celebrating 50 years as the world's leading authority on post-tensioning. For five decades, it has served professionals by developing standards, educational programs and technical resources. PTI is marking the milestone throughout 2026 with a program that includes a special-edition anniversary logo.

PTI Board President Coy Williams frames it well, "This anniversary is a chance to honor the visionaries who laid the groundwork, the members who drive PTI's mission forward and the innovations that continue to shape the future of post-tensioning."

The CIM program tells a parallel story. Launched in 1996 with two students through a partnership with Middle Tennessee State University, it is the first four-year, STEM-focused business degree in the U.S. built to develop leaders for the modern concrete industry. Today the program boasts more than 1,800 graduates, a near-100% job placement rate, and a presence at five universities.

As Executive Director Nicole Maher states, the 30-year milestone "is a testament to the strength of our industry partnerships, the dedication of our Patrons and the success of our graduates." Together, these celebrations show an industry investing in both its standards and its people.

As AOE helped PTI and CIM prepare for their milestones, one key element was the development of special-edition anniversary logos. While milestones invite change, this is where organizations often misstep. For example, for its 20th anniversary, Spotify swapped its stable app icon for a green, glittery disco ball. User reaction was immediate and largely negative, with subscribers calling it disorienting and prompting them to move the app off their home screens. The often cited Cracker Barrel example reinforces the same broad lesson: dramatic logo changes can overshadow the celebration and alienate loyal audiences.

The takeaway is simple. A special-edition anniversary logo, like the ones created for PTI and CIM, work best as a respectful evolution that honors a recognizable identity rather than erasing it.

Best Practices for Celebrating an Anniversary

In addition to branding related to anniversaries, there are a variety of unique opportunities to highlight your success with employees, customers and your industry. Ideas for a successful integrated anniversary campaign include:

Digital campaigns. Maintain a consistent presence across your social media platforms with anniversary-themed content throughout the year. Highlight key moments, employee stories, historical milestones and behind-the-scenes insights to keep your audience engaged and connected.

Public relations campaigns. Share your story more broadly through press releases, media outreach and targeted email communications. Use these channels to highlight major accomplishments, community impact and future vision, reinforcing your organization’s credibility and influence.

Timelines. Bring your history to life with a visual timeline that showcases key projects, growth milestones and defining moments. This can be used across presentations, digital channels and physical displays to give audiences a clear sense of your evolution.

Website updates. Create a dedicated section or microsite that serves as the central hub for your anniversary content. Include your story, interactive elements, visuals and updates so visitors can easily explore your journey and milestones.

Videos. Use video to combine imagery, storytelling and voice to create an emotional connection. Feature interviews with leadership, employees or long-time customers, along with archival materials, to celebrate your organization’s impact and vision for the future.

And most important, celebrate! Host events, recognize employees and bring people together to mark the occasion. An anniversary should be as meaningful for your team as it is for your organization.

Looking Back to Move Forward

The most meaningful anniversaries honor the people who built the organization, while creating momentum for the future. If your milestone is approaching, start planning early and treat it as a launchpad—not a finish line. Now is the time to begin—contact AOE. We would be honored to help you build a celebration that truly reflects your story.
